My Students

My students have a lot of energy and they absolutely crave 21st century digital learning. Our school is predominantly low-socio economic, and many of our students do not have access to computers in their homes. They love anything hands-on, and I would love to provide them with hands-on experiences regularly.

My kids come from many backgrounds, but the majority of them are impoverished.

Some of our kids move around, live with multiple relatives or other family members, and many of our kids have parents who are incarcerated or simply just not in the picture. For them, school is their safe haven, a place of consistency and for many, their only comfort zone.

My Project

I would love to have a class set (20-25) of netbooks. Our campus lacks adequate technology resources to accommodate the learning needs of our students; we have two empty computer labs in which many of the computers are broken or nonfunctioning in some way. Additionally, with the high demand of computer usage by our math dept, the other subject areas tend to get left battling over lab availability and space. Our current ELA performance standards require students to absorb information from multiple forms of media, including electronic. With a class set of netbooks, my kids could perform research, search online news stories and current events, and create digital presentations, all of which would satisfy those state learning standards. My students simply cannot learn everything through old school methods (books, magazines, textbooks, ect). They learn better and attain more knowledge by doing and working with their hands, and netbooks would provide them with that learning opportunity.

Providing my students with personal netbooks in their ELA classroom will afford them learning opportunities and hands-on experience with the latest technology, while simultaneously allowing them to have fun.

Our students are digital natives, and with everything in online format these days, it is a non-negotiable that our children become more savvy with electronic media than just Facebook or Twitter/IM. They need to learn the value add of technology as more than just a social network.
