Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fortunate to have music class for the first time in over 10 years, however the instrument supply at the school is limited! With support students will be playing chords and melodies on Orff xylophones this winter.

I teach general music at 2 schools to students pre K through 8th grade in metropolitan Illinois.

One of the schools I am teaching teaching at this year is a new teaching assignment, and the school has not had music instruction for approximately 10 years. This project is for students who attend that school. The school owns few instruments and the few resources which are owned by the school are in need of repair and replacement. The student population is diverse an includes African American, Latino, Caucasian, and Asian students, Admittance to the school is by lottery, and students come from all economic levels.

My Project

There is a need at this school for Orff instruments, or xylophones. For this project I have requested one alto xylophone with mallets. This will mark the beginning of the collection of Orff instruments which I intend to build with the assistance of Donors Choose contributors! With this xylophone, students in music classes will accompany singing and music activities by having a student play chordal accompaniment. Students will be able to compose music on this xylophone and other classroom instruments, and then perform the composition for the class. The xylophone will also be used in classroom music improvisations. Students will learn to improvise by playing rhythmic and melodic patterns on the instrument. Students will learn about elements of movement by dancing to songs played on the xylophone.

The creativity of my students will be cultivated, and the arts of music and movement will be naturally fused!
