My Students

Have you ever felt behind the times? My students have limited access to the world of art. The nearest metropolitan area with a sizable art museum is at least 300 miles away. Field trips are impractical and beyond our budget. The changing world of art demands exposure to new technology.

My students attend a very small, very rural, low income school ( close to 50% free and reduced lunch), in a remote agricultural setting.

There are 190 students in grades 7-12. Their past art experiences have been limited because of our location. Many have never been to an art museum and have little appreciation for the many forms of artistic expression. The majority of my students rely solely on athletics and occasional community social events for an outlet to express themselves. They are limited in their opportunities for creative expression. Even with their limited exposure to the world of art a surprising number of students have pursued a career in the arts. We have one attending the Perpich Center for The Arts. Three have graduated from the Minnesota College of Art and Design. Others have gone on to pursue other art related areas. This is an artistic community and supports our art program.

My Project

I plan to use this tablet as a seed to a future goal of 15 for my art room. The addition of these tablets will give our students enhanced learning advantages. Being able to instantly address visual information streamlines instructional technology in a fun, exploratory way and will keep them connected in the arts. We would be able to utilize hundreds of applications that have been designed to inspire creativity. We could sculpt, draw, and paint digitally while instantly accessing other artists and applying new and innovative techniques to make and share art. There’s a great wealth of educational apps that are springing up and we need to have a tool like this to stay current with these new technological advances.

This project will broaden their exposure to other creative activities and expand their horizons regarding what others around the world have accomplished artistically.

This will help to give my students a competitive edge technologically and a broader view of creative endeavors around the world and different cultures.
