My Students

First grade students are required to read 40 words per minute at the end of the school year! Wow, that's hard for a 6 year old!

My students come from a variety of backgrounds.

We are a very diverse class. Our school is an art and technology academy. It is a school of choice, which means they must enter the lottery to be chosen to come to our school. The lottery officials are very careful to pick a variety of students from different races and economic backgrounds so that our classes are evenly distributed.

My Project

Research has shown that students' fluency increases when they are read-to (and shown the correct way to read). Because some students are coming from homes with parents that do not read to them, these books on tape will help them to understand how to read with fluency. They will be able to "mimic" the readers on the cds as they follow along with the book. This project will also help students to improve their concentration as they follow along with the words in the books.

This project will help my struggling readers become more fluent.

It will help them to enjoy reading and show them the proper way to read with fluency. I'm confident that after using the books on tape and following along with the CD, students will increase their fluency scores at the end of their first grade year.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
