My Students

My students are fortunate enough to have one Nook Color eReader in our classroom but, with 25 students taking turns reading books and practicing math skills, they don't get much time on it.

I have 25 wonderful second grade students.

They are inquisitive and creative. They come to me with a wide range of reading abilities. They love reading with a buddy or listening to books on cd. My students are familiar with technology, like the Nook, that helps them become better readers and mathematicians.

My Project

I am requesting a Nook Color eReader because I have one for my students and I am convinced it is one of the most incredible learning tools for students. My dream is to have four Nooks in my classroom. This will be Nook number two. With the Nook, I am able to adjust the level of math facts for my students with the tap of my finger. I currently have 41 books of various levels on our Nook that can be downloaded onto another Nook. Many of these books read the story to the student so they can follow along and build their fluency and pacing. Some books highlight the words as it reads to the student which reinforces directionality and is a great tool for my lowest readers and my English language learners. The Nook allows my lower readers to read books at their level without the embarrassment of reading a "baby book". My higher level readers are learning to record their thinking in the Nook. With a second Nook, eight students will have access every day to these wonderful apps and books.

Reading is an essential life skill.

The Nook is a tool that helps all readers improve their skills. There are hundreds of educational apps that will benefit my students now and for years to come. Please join me in my dream to provide this technology to my students. Thank You!
