Someone's in the Kitchen With...Mrs. P.

My students need cookware, including fry pans and saucepans, that will allow them to safely and efficiently take their basic skills to a higher and more varied culinary level.

My Students

Just the other day one of the students was melting butter and asked,"Mrs. P. don't you think we need new skillets?" I looked down to see the skillet heavily leaning to one side and the melting butter all on one side. I have great students who are very patient and deserve and need usable cookware.

Our school is one of the oldest high schools in a county that was once a farming community but because we are next door to a rather large city, we are now more urban and suburban.

I have a nice mixture of students from different ethnic groups, backgrounds, income levels, and grade levels. I teach a range of students from those who consistently make the honor roll and take honors classes to those with special needs. I have a nice mix of male and female students who work four to a kitchen. The students take my class for various reasons, the biggest one being they like to eat! Though they think it's easy to cook, they quickly learn how important it is to read the recipe, measure properly, and follow the directions. They also learn about working cooperatively in a group, being responsible, and cleaning up after themselves. Students also receive extra credit for cooking at home so I get a lot a great notes from parents.

My Project

Every semester I have the pleasure of watching approximately 60 students begin their cooking journey with simple baking powder biscuits and cinnamon muffins and work up to Chinese fried rice and lasagna, all from scratch. As they work together to plan the labs, successfully make the dish of the day, and clean up, I realize that they are learning basic skills they can build on and use the rest of their lives. Presently the lab does not have enough fry pans and covered sauce pans for each kitchen. Over time and with excessive use the cookware has gotten old, damaged and unsafe. I have thrown some pieces away so they wouldn't be used. Due to the downturn in the economy the school system has not given our class funds to replace anything in our kitchens. With new cookware the students will be able to saute' and fry on the stove-top and not just in an electric skillet. They will be able to cook rice in a pan with a lid. In short, they will be able to use the proper cookware for the job. My students need new cookware that will allow them to safely and efficiently take their basic skills to a higher and more varied culinary level.

Foods 1 classes always have a waiting list which thrills me as a teacher.

Past students always come by and tell me how much they miss my class. It is important to me that my students have the best opportunity to learn basic cooking skills that will benefit them now and in the future. I want them to have proper, safe equipment and this is one way I can hopefully provide it for them.
