Using White Boards to Explore Many Avenues of Algebra

My students need a class set of white boards, pens, and erasers.

My Students

Do you remember how hard Algebraic concepts were for you?

I work in a school that is less than three years-old and is home to many diverse students.

Many of the classroom supplies, manipulatives, and games were purchased with my own money or are hand-me-downs from my retired mother who previously taught math. My students are focused and have dreams bigger than we did in middle school. I only hope that I can supply them with the tools they need to be successful in not only algebra, but also in high school and college. Students learn more from participating in algebra than direct instruction. Algebra creates hurdles in math for many students who have issues with concepts that are abstract. My classes use white boards on a daily basis in order to provide interaction between students and the math concepts. I currently have a set of white boards that are peeling and chipped, which were adopted from a retired teacher.

My Project

With the economic downturn for districts and schools tightening budgets, I find myself turning to people like you to help me give my students the opportunity to learn through the use of white boards. White boards give my students a hands-on approach to algebra and specifically access to graphing. When teaching this concept, I have found that the use of white boards enhances understanding. Using white boards gives students the opportunity to learn by doing instead of learning through lecture and notes. With a new set of white boards, pens, and erasers we can learn new algebraic concepts and reinforce previous information. The double-sided white boards contain a coordinate grid on one side and blank on the other. The coordinate grid will enable our class to experience graphing.

When students learn through their own movement and use of whiteboards, they have a deeper understanding of not only how, but also why they arrived at an answer.

Please give my students the opportunity to learn by doing and have a deeper understanding of what algebra really is through the use of white boards. With your help, we will be able to learn with white boards.
