My Students

I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher in NYC. I have a group of very young and excited students. A majority of the students in my class have working parents who do not often have enough time to spend with them.

My parents send their children off to school and then head off to work.

Many times, they do not have the time to even drop off their child at school; their babysitters do. Whenever we have an activity in our classroom, I try to invite all the parents to come into the classroom and participate in this activity, whether it's a pumpkin picnic or a pajama party. Parents do not often have the time to take out from their busy schedules to spend an hour with their child in the classroom. I want to try to involve my parents in classroom activities as much as possible so that they can become involved in the daily lives of their child.

My Project

I want to include family involvement in my classroom as much as possible. One way of accomplishing this is to have a day each month set aside for scrapbooking, where parents come into the classroom and spend an hour to an hour and a half with their child adding pictures and pages to their scrapbooks. They can discuss with each other what pictures they want to add, as well as what items to add to each page. We need scrapbooks for the parents and children to work on. We also need card stock paper because we are also running low on scrapbook paper. The paper that we use has fun designs that add a little color and pizazz to the photographs. The paper is needed to help maintain the desire and momentum that each child and their parent have contributed to their scrapbook. This scrapbook will not only build family involvement, but provide a yearbook that they helped work on together to be remembered.

It will help to make all the difference to have something to discuss and choose to use as the background of their scrapbooks.
