Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a high-risk community, in which one can only imagine the struggles they face on a daily basis. Yet they come to class, ready to learn about the ancient civilizations of our world. My students would greatly benefit from eyewitness books, to make history come alive even more.
My students are sixth graders who've grown up under very difficult circumstances.
Many of their parents work multiple jobs, and have little time to take them to museums, or even communicate with them on a daily basis. Our school is a small charter. Some students come to our school to escape the influence of gangs at the local middle school. Regardless of their challenges, my students are an extremely curious, involved, academic bunch. On any given day, over half of them raise their hands with such excitement to share their ideas on the influence of ancient civilizations. They take notes like college students, and act out events in history with enthusiasm. They deserve to have as many resources as possible, so that history may come alive for them.
My Project
The "Eyewitness Books" and historical fiction newspapers I've requested include amazing photos and illustrations of real-live artifacts. These visuals spark an incredible curiosity in the minds of my students, encouraging them to delve deeper into the study of history. The historical fiction newspapers inspire students to think creatively and critically about the events of history. All of these resources will encourage independent research and learning, which is a crucial in preparing my students to be critical thinkers.
I would greatly appreciate if you donated to my project.
All students deserve the opportunity to interact with artifacts from history, and due to the fact that many of my students can't make it to the museum or the library, we must help them by bringing these resources into the classroom. I've seen the impact these books have on my students engagement with history; they cause them to deeply analyze the topics we are learning, ask specific questions, and truly enjoy the study of history.
