My Students

Wii, Nintendo, XBox, and more! This is what our children know, so why not teach them using what they love.

I teach fifty-six 5th grade students at a rural public PreK to 5th grade school.

We are located in the heart of a farming community in Louisiana. Half of my students read below level which is between a 2nd and 3rd grade level. Over half the class is tactile learners. They love having Reading in a small group setting, but I am having difficulty maintaining motivation and focus in stations for those outside my group. They yearn for technology.

My Project

I will use the iPod touches to individualize instruction through learning stations. This way I can individualize instruction for those outside my group as well as those with me. These apps will employ playful interactive formats that captivate the student's attention. Making learning "fun" is a very valuable component and if the app is also cognitively demanding, can help it stick. Apps such as Flashcards and Rootology will be used to recall information. Other apps such as Photostory and Lifecards will provide opportunities for students to explain ideas or concepts. The multimedia age our students are growing up in requires the ability to analyze content so apps such as Poplet and iCard Sort will be used. SurveyBoy is an app that will be used where students can create their own questions and view the data when the survey is completed. Apps such as Storyboard and Book Creator will be used to create and design products. Specific apps will be chosen with the child's needs in mind.

It is very difficult to motivate 5th graders to read, especially the ones that are struggling.

I WANT and NEED to develop these reading abilities before they move on to middle school. Through the use of the iPods students will be motivated to work because it will simulate play. At the same time, I will be able to target personal instructional needs for each student by using apps that support these needs.
