My Students

For many of my students, reading is a chore. Many students have challenges regarding decoding and fluency, which in turn affects their ability to comprehend what they read. Bringing MP3 players into the classroom will allow my students to comprehend while they practice being more active readers.

My 8th and 9th grade students attend a public school in a rural western New York town that supports industries in agriculture, tourism, and education among others.

As in any community, my students come from a variety of backgrounds and have a variety of educational needs.

My Project

My students need five MP3 players to listen to audiobooks in active reading stations and while reading independently. Bringing MP3 players into the classroom will allow students to enjoy the lush language and the exciting tales that are being told. Students who normally struggle to understand sight words and read sentences fluently will join in the journey as we hatch dragon eggs in Pern, watch the sunrise with Johnny, eavesdrop on lovers' conversations and confessions with a priest in Verona, feel snow on our paws for the first time in the Klondike, or hear the testimony of a disabled African American man or the musings of a Jewish teenager in Amsterdam. These MP3 players will allow all students to experience the literature as a craft; once they do not struggle with comprehension, they can engage in analysis.
