iTune into Reading... Do You?

My students need 3 iPods to listen to popular books modeling fluent reading at or above their reading level during our independent reading time in first grade.

My Students

"If parents understood the huge educational benefit and intense happiness brought about by reading aloud to their children, and if every [adult] read aloud a minimum of three stories a day to the children in their lives, we could probably wipe out illiteracy within one generation." Mem Fox, author.

My first-graders are eager, exuberant, and energetic!

They arrive at school each day excited about a new day of learning and if I can connect learning to their everyday lives, as well as making learning fun, their potential is infinite! These students enjoy learning to read, though it can be daunting and difficult at times. While their energy can sometimes seem almost too much to control for them, they are amazingly attentive during read aloud. They simply cannot get enough and are constantly requesting that I read a particular book to them that they are either unable to read independently or that they just love to hear aloud. I wish that I could take time to honor each request, but there are only so many hours a day! My students come from a time where technology is everything and they seem to know more about it than I could ever imagine 6 and 7 years old to know, but together we were surprised at how we can use this technology as a class to support our reading and learning!

My Project

Reading aloud to children is one of the single most important things we can do to influence their learning and iPods would allow my children more opportunities to hear books read aloud. I use read aloud in first grade to teach literacy strategies, as well as math, science, and social studies concepts, but wish I had time to read even more, especially for the love of reading! During independent and buddy reading time, students read books at their own levels, which can be dry and somewhat lacking in the comprehension department at early levels. They gravitate to books about their favorite characters or subjects, much of which can be too difficult for beginning readers to decode and understand successfully. Audiobooks support young readers by allowing them to independently access these materials! They can listen to fluent readers read accurately and smoothly with expression, as well as be exposed to new vocabulary words and grow their budding comprehension skills- and it's fun!

By providing my class with iPods, my students will be able to be more independent as growing readers, and be in charge of their own reading destiny.

They will be able to choose from a wealth of read aloud, rather than the one CD put out at the listening center that they may not want to hear. Audiobooks allow me to provide a wider range of material, as new titles crop up all the time, and they're cheaper than CD's! IPods will make reading "cooler" and fun and inspire readers to read, read, read!
