Reading Music On The Floor Is Hard!

My students need 10 new stands on which to put music books and sheet music for year round instruction.

My Students

Clumsy teenage hands and tired eyes, from studying or video game playing the night before, make playing music at 8:35 a.m. difficult. Imagine the continued frustration when all of your books and music flutters to the ground after yet another stand fails to hold the lightest material on earth: paper.

Our school is located in rural Missouri where hunting is a family occasion and small town life reigns supreme.

The students here are bright and cautiously optimistic of having a successful life both inside and outside their small town dynamic. The small town school setting also allows for the students to take part in multiple extracurricular activities. The students are enriched in many ways by the many opportunities given to them. These students are looking for a way to make an impression on those around them and to be accepted by their peers and teachers. Due to negative small-town attitudes, many are jaded into believing they will not amount to much. However, the students peek around every corner that may hold the key to success. My students are talented, full of potential, eager to learn, and innocent in their desire to please. We, the teachers, do the best we can to pull these hopeful attitudes to the surface and water it with skills and hope to send them out to be successful.

My Project

Every day in band is another chance to express themselves in a different way and every minute is crucial. Distractions abound in an environment with so many students, and the greatest distraction is malfunctioning equipment. Our stands are constantly providing the band grief and an even humorous, hierarchical struggle to get the best stands in the room. This often leaves last chair students and freshmen with the worst stands. However, even the stands considered "the best" are outdated and constantly need tightening and adjustment. New stands will cut down on frustration and minimize misuse of instructional time. Furthermore, it will show that all students deserve equal, quality, and functional equipment to be the best that they can. It will also cut down on sharing stands, which often leads to mistakes in musical reading. New stands will also allow for multiple activities to occur at one time without shortchanging one group over the other. New stands will allow for everyone to play!

The band program here has been an afterthought for many students, teachers, and administrators for years.

Recently, the program has begun to grow and excitement for band is building. The students need to see that their love for music is important and that they deserve the best that we can give them. The students take pride in their band room, their instruments, their uniforms, and the hard work they put in every day. Their hard work deserves equipment that works hard for them.
