My Students

Have you ever moved from one town, city, or state, to another? How about moving from one country to another? Imagine moving from one country to another in which the culture, language, and people are very different. This is the hardship that the students of my ESOL class face on a daily basis.

My students live in a small farming town in Georgia.

My class consists of two sixth grade students, one seventh grade student, and three eighth grade students. I currently have one student that does not speak English. My other students can communicate, but are far from fluent. All of the students in my ESOL class are very eager to learn and work very hard to complete all assignments and master all standards put before them. Happiness radiates from the students in my class. When they walk into a room, their motivation and determination are sure to put a smile on anyone's face.

My Project

The students in my ESOL class come from homes of people that moved to this country to help make ends meet. There is not much money left over to buy these students computers, clothes, printers, etc. At our school you have to pay to print items in color at the library. Although it may only be spare change to many of us, it is too much for most of my students to spare. I would like to provide my students with opportunity to have access to a color printer to assist in their production of classroom projects. It will also benefit our lessons because I will be able to use color coding when teaching grammar, which will be very beneficial when working on the different parts of speech. In my ESOL class we are creating a cultural cookbook. Students are bringing recipes from home and translating them into English. We are also including recipes donated from other teachers in the school system. The students would love to be able to include colorful displays of the dishes in the cookbook.

As an ESOL teacher I know how important it is to keep the culture of each student alive.

Through this cookbook, I hope to make the students feel as if their culture is just an important as ours. I want them to have the feeling of contributing to society, and the warm feeling of being appreciated. Having others look to them for ideas is a great way to achieve this.
