My Students

You can't get through a day without using math. You need money and time skills to do your job and get paid (and spend your salary on fun things!) You need fractions to cook your dinner and before you can do any of that you have to know how to count.

We are a special education classroom with 11 students, most of which fall somewhere on the autism spectrum.

We have a wide range of needs and abilities but one thing all of us share is that we like to learn with hands on and visual supports. We also struggle to generalize our skills across multiple settings and activities so we need lots of practice and lots of variety to our practicing.

My Project

One challenge facing students with autism is a difficulty generalizing skills across multiple mediums. If I ask a student to count using only little square blocks, they will learn to count only little square blocks. I want my students to be able to count anything and everything life needs them to count. For other students I want them to learn to use money and time effectively to build independence and life skills. Other students are working on understanding fractions, having a visual representation of these tough concepts is key for students on the autism spectrum. These materials will give my students the hands on and visual representations to learn their math or generalize their math skills across multiple examples.

I am trying to give my students a broad foundation of skills that will have a lasting impact in their daily lives.
