Having Fun Learning to Read

My students need phonemic awareness scripts, match-ups, letter kits, and 2 game libraries to practice their sounds and fluency.

My Students

What's the difference between a cat and a rat? Nothing if you can't read the words. My students are learning how to hear the sounds of words and correspond letters to those sounds. It truly is the MAGIC of reading and we need some fun activities to make the practice effective and fun.

I am the Reading Specialist of a public school in Nevada.

My students are those that are achieving below grade-level in Reading. With a focus on early intervention, my students are mostly in Kindergarten through 2nd grade with some 3rd and 4th graders. The younger students come in with such disparity that it is important to catch them up. They typically need help in first identifying sounds and letters, rhymes and syllables and from there we work on fluency and some comprehension.

My Project

EVERYONE loves games! I love it when I get a call from a parent who says that their child enjoys coming to my class. I make learning fun. Games are a great way to practice our reading concepts and build confidence. These students need practice and practice builds confidence. The games I've requested from Lakeshore are proven resources for matching beginning/middle/ending sounds, rhyming, for making/breaking words, and for building fluent readers.

This project is important because our resource library has NO games for early learners.

I have plenty of comprehension, site word, and higher thinking games but nothing for the beginning reader. This list of games will be a valuable resource for myself and all the students I will see in the years to come. Thank you!
