This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"There is no substitute for books in the life of a child." ~ Mary Ellen Chase ~ First graders need tools to practice decoding (sounding out words) as well as quality books that are at their reading level to foster an appreciation for and confidence in reading.

I teach First Grade at a public school in California that serves a low income, high need community of English Language Learners.

These first graders are eager readers! They show "ganas" or determination when it comes to tricky words and they feel pride when they can read a book that is "just right" for them. You can help them grow confidence by providing tools that enable them to practice their reading skills.

My Project

First graders need quality leveled readers that will inspire their learning about particular topics. This literature will help encourage a desire to learn how to read, while developing young, impressionable minds! The magnetic letters and whiteboards, as well as the word family flipbooks help to practice sounding out words, as well as recognizing sight words that they may encounter in their books. The sequencing cards help students to practice the skill of summarizing the beginning, middle, and end of a story.

I truly believe that quality literature and literacy tools foster the desire to read and engage young minds in the subject matter I teach.
