My Students

As a school on Pine Ridge Reservation, our library consists of thousands of donated books. Unfortunately, most of the books that we receive are outdated, inappropriate, or unwanted. Our students need age and level appropriate books so that they can learn to love reading!

My students are Oglala Lakota (Sioux), living on a reservation in South Dakota.

They are in the 5th-8th grade. This project will benefit over 70 students! My students are proud to be Lakota. They are fantastic athletes and artists, always outspoken, and easy to excite. This year, they hope to achieve the goal of reading 500 independent reading books before summer vacation in June! Their favorite books are Magic Tree House books and Animorphs. Their favorite subjects in school are silent reading time, gym, and science. Almost all of my students own or share horses and love to ride. Books about horses are another favorite. After school, they play basketball and ride horses.

My Project

As a school on Pine Ridge Reservation, our library consists of thousands of donated books. Unfortunately, most of the books that we receive are outdated, inappropriate, or unwanted. A quick trip around the school library reveals dozens of Harlequin romance novels, outdated social studies texts like, “What You Need to Know About the Two Vietnams,” and non sequiturs such as “Woman to Woman: Questions to Ask Your Gynecologist.” Our students will only learn to love reading if they have ageâ€"and levelâ€"appropriate books; new popular series with appealing titles and covers. Many of our students claim that “books are boring” and given their limited book choices, I don’t blame them! We have only a handful of books available for our low readers, and most of the well-loved books are torn and worn from overuse.
