This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the joy you felt when you wove something? My art students want to weave but our school has very few looms. With your support,they can learn how to recycle cardboard to make their own loom and create endangered animal purses - carrying an important tale to wear and share.

I work in a public primary school in a mainly Hispanic community in NYC.

The school has a large ELL population, with many students coming from areas where Spanish is the primary language. As a result, many students are isolated by the language barrier. In addition, my students struggle economically, almost all living at and well below the poverty level. Crime, domestic violence and substance abuse are rampant throughout the neighborhood, leaving many of the children with threatening and unsafe home and community environments. For many, school is a last sanctuary of calm and comfort. Unfortunately, NYC does not consider art to be a high priority subject. As a result, I teach over 550 students per week with very few supplies. The true tragedy is that for many of my students, art is one of the few releases and avenues of expression open to them. Given the intense pressure and sense of powerlessness under which they live their day-to-day lives, having no art often means having no voice.

My Project

The children will create a woven endangered species purse with a variety of yarns. Orange,white,yellow and black yarns can be interwoven to represent the Monarch butterfly.They can add beads to look like milkweed, some green to symbolize its relationship with milkweed and the Oyamel fir trees many of the Monarchs migrate to in Michoacan & Mexican States.They can also include other colors representing the perils the chosen endangered animal encounters due to human activity.A lot of research will convey color choice & layout design. The requested materials of an assortment of yarns, needles and warping threads would provide the materials for my art students to create their own endangered animal awareness purses.They will create them on looms which will be made from the cardboard trash that piles up outside our gym.They will become more aware of the hidden applications in recycling cardboard.They will recycle,weave their nonfiction tales,and carry a purse with more than one purpose.

Weaving a tale to tell would intertwine Science, Math, Literacy,Social Studies, Health and Art within a hands on art piece.It will utilize artistry in nonfiction research projects.It will develop their designing skills based on their chosen animal.It will inspire them to share their reason for topic choice.It will build upon their research skills,artistry and presentation skills.The purses will create awareness about the endangered animals and spur them on to advocacy.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
