Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When was the last time you went to your favorite cafe, curled up on a comfy chair and lost yourself in a good book? My students need to have a comfortable place to enjoy, share and discuss books in our classroom.

I have 23 active students who love to engage with books and each other.

In the last 10 years I have seen the population at our school change dramatically. Many of our students now qualify for free and reduced lunch due to the economic downturn and many are mobile and move from place to place and won't even finish the year in my classroom. Many of these students don't have a book collection at home that they can cuddle up and read from. I want my kids to find a reading spot in my classroom that they can cuddle up with a good book and just read.

My Project

When you come to my classroom you will notice right away that the most visited area in the room is the classroom library area. My kids just can't get enough good books in their hands and you can enjoy watching them during the day pick out just-right books to help them on their reading journey. The trouble is that there isn't a comfy place that you can curl up in the classroom and enjoy those books. Kids have to sit at a desk with a hard chair or worse yet, on the carpeted hard concrete floor. I want to change that. The fire code prevents me from being able to bring in regular couches or chairs to sit on, but with your donation we can provide kid-sized comfy furniture that will meet the requirements of the fire code and that would provide the same kind of cafe corner experience that we love as adults.

Research says that kids need more time in books plain and simple to help them make gains in reading.

As an adult you can find a comfy spot and curl up with a good book for hours. Why can't we provide that for kids rather than always being in a stiff desk or chair? You can help encourage kids to read more everyday and have a place to discuss books with each other if you provide a donation to our Cafe Corner project. Thank you for your consideration.
