Our School Captured in Moving Pictures: Video on Student Website

My students need a camcorder to add video to our award-winning student news website.

My Students

Help our student newspaper staff be like journalists in the "real world" who are writing, blogging, taking photos, and, yes, even recording video for news websites like the one they currently produce weekly in the journalism/newspaper class.

The newspaper staff at our school is a group of students who complete a rigorous application process for selection to the staff.

These students are among the best and brightest at our high school, an urban school of about 1,500 students in Mississippi that has a high level of low-income and minority students. Many of the students on the newspaper staff plan a future in communications, and recent alumni have gone on to study communications at universities such as Howard University and Columbia University. To give students a more real-life preparation to work in media, the print newspaper moved online, and students now wish to add video to this website so they can also gain valuable experience integrating video into reporting, news writing, photography, blogging, and web design. I am requesting a camcorder to add video to our award-winning student news website.

My Project

Students have already worked very hard to move from a print to an online format, and continue to improve their skills with a website. In the past, they have produced 3-4 print papers a year. Now, we can update a website constantly, and have moved to a weekly update of the website. Last year, the newspaper staff won first place in the state in design and second place in general excellence for their work on the website. Most successful news websites have video integrated into their pages, and in the most successful journalism and mass communications program at universities and colleges, there is a movement toward "convergence," in which students must integrate writing and broadcasting skills to become more marketable as employees in the rapidly world of journalism and mass media.

These student are talented, hard working and committed.

Constantly, they work to make their website a "real newspaper," taking on the big stories and controversial topics that true journalists cover daily. They are hungry for experiences that will prepare them for working in journalism in college and as a career, and there is zero funding for the necessary supplies to give them those experiences. While we do fundraising activities, those funds barely cover the operating costs already in place.
