My Students

Mis estudiantes pueden leer en dos lenguajes pero es más fácil para encontrar materiales en inglés. My students can read in two languages but it is much easier to find materials in English than Spanish. I can find English books at any garage sale but I have to buy all my Spanish books new.

My students come from English speaking and Spanish speaking homes and are participating in a dual language bilingual program housed in a monolingual school.

Our free and reduced lunch students amount to 64% of our school population. The students in my classroom are all very high readers in English but desperately need more Spanish materials in our classroom library.

My Project

I am requesting Spanish editions of classic stories to encourage independent, partner, and group reading. I am desperately in need of Spanish books with CDs for our listening center. They are so easy to find in English but not Spanish. It would be beneficial for the students to hear these stories read to them by a native Spanish speaker. My students love to read in English and I want to keep inspiring them to carry this love of reading into Spanish with familiar books that will help increase their vocabulary.

Again, because we are teaching in both English and Spanish, it is vital to have high quality and high interest materials for students to use.

This year's class loves reading and does a wonderful job discussing books but they need so much more practice in Spanish and deserve to have the same access to these materials as they have to English materials.
