My Students

I'm a BASKETCASE and I need your help with baskets! Although we have studied paper weaving and basketry, many of my students have not been able to truly appreciate the beauty and value of baskets.

The students at our school live on the outskirts of a large town.

Whenever they need something, they can easily go to a store and buy it. It is much harder for the students of today to understand the hard work that many of the early settlers had to do. If a settler needed a new blanket for the winter, they had to sew it together. If they needed food for dinner, many of them had to work on a farm or go hunting. My students are curious and love hands-on activities. Throughout the years they have been learning about the early American settlers. This project would be a great addition to their learning experience. Through the Arts, they would learn more about the joys and hard work of the early settlers.

My Project

A few years ago, I was able to take a course on how to make baskets using reeds, wooden bases, and beads. I even taught it to a small group of students. They successfully dyed their own reeds and created unique shapes and designs with their weaving.

I hope that with your help, I can do this project with all of the 5th grade students.

If my students are given the opportunity to make their own basket, using authentic supplies, they will have a new admiration for the traditional craft and learn a little bit more the life of the early settlers of North and South Carolina.
