My Students

Do you remember what it was like when your teacher found creative ways to bring different topics to life? We had to find a creative way to merge Social Studies and Reading.

I teach a group of 33 4th graders.

They are an amazing group of kids that have a love for learning. We do have a large portion of our student population on free and reduced lunch. We have little funds for extra resources, such as class sets for novels.

My Project

My students need a class set of novels for the Ballad of Lucy Whipple. We want to use these class sets for years to come! Our hope is to bring the Gold Rush to life with this class set of novels! We wanted to find a creative way to combine social studies and reading. One of the crucial topics in 4th grade is the Gold Rush. With this series of novels, we will be able to integrate important reading tools such as making inferences, sequence of events, predicting outcomes, and main idea all while discussing the impact of the Gold Rush on American families.

This project is important to the 4th grade because we know this is a way for the Gold Rush to come alive during our normal reading time!

We know students have limited information about the Gold Rush. Our goal is teach them how exciting it was, but also how difficult it was for families, in particularly kids.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
