My Students

My students want to READ. A small group of students started meeting in the library during lunch to read and talk about books. Other students started asking if they could join and now we have three book clubs. However, we need more book sets.

My students are 5-8th graders who live in a rural community.

Our free and reduced lunch rate is at 50%. Many of our students cannot afford to buy books and the school has already purchased all of the fiction books sets that the budget will allow. Our district is currently in fiscal emergency so we have to choose carefully where are funds are spent. Our state testing focuses on non-fiction books so we have been told that any books that are purchased in the future must be non-fiction. I have students who are coming on their own to the library to read together. I want to encourage these students to read and enjoy their reading.

My Project

I have chosen very high interest books for both girls and boys. My girls love coming of age and romance books. Remember your first Judy Blume book? My girls love her stories as much as I did. My boys want to read fantasy, mystery. They love books about war and anything with a little gore. I hope to keep the book club going all year and then continuing it next year. I hope to form a relationship with these students surrounding the love of reading that will last though out their school years and will develop in them a love of reading that will last a life time.

What could be more satisfying then helping young people learn to love reading, improve their reading and read for a life time.

Please help me to continue encouraging my students love of reading by providing them with high interest text that they can enjoy together.
