My students need 4 sets of leveled readers in order to have individualized stories that target their specific area of need in reading, for their Take Me Home book bags.
Imagine having no books at home waiting for you to turn the pages and learn to read. Many of my students face this challenge everyday.
Our school has a very diverse population both economically and culturally.
We are low income and serve over 400 students in grades K-5. I am hoping with the success of this project that I can expand to include books at more levels and integrate the books with ipods. The students come from homes in which some children do not even have access to books and the only place in which they get to experience rich and diverse text is at school. Reading aloud to young children is the single most effective thing parents can do to help prepare their children to succeed in school. Unfortunately, fewer than half of U.S. children ages 5 and under are read to every day, placing them at risk for reading delays and school failure. I would like to close this achievement gap for my high poverty students. By providing these books in an easy "Take Me Home" program, the parents and children will have the resources they need to promote and build literacy skills.
My Project
In order to keep kids interested in reading they must feel successful. They feel most successful when they are given the appropriate text for their reading level and ability. Every few weeks I do a reading assessment called a running record. From this assessment I can target the necessary skills needed for each individual student, as well as their current reading level. This allows me to provide the appropriate book for the student to take home.
What we need are leveled reading books.
The nurturing and one-on-one attention from parents during reading aloud encourages children to form a positive association with books and reading. It is a known fact that children who are read to at least three times a week develop a love of text and reading, are more successful in school and have a more positive overall attitude towards school. Being able to provide appropriate books for my students to borrow and read at home will help foster their success.
