Remember the excitement you felt when you grew your first garden? Well, my students are ready for the excitement of planting and watching seedlings grow.
My students are a culturally diverse population of students who all attend a Title I school.
Over 98% of them receive free or reduced lunches, and the majority of them participate in after school enrichment programs. When I ask them what types of activities they would like to do, their response always has to do with planting seeds.
My Project
Since my students are infatuated with planting things, I feel that the odd pods will provide a quick way for students to see the fruits of their labor. This kit comes with seeds to grow cactus in a reasonably short amount of time which will provide immediate gratification. The "Grow Your Own Lily Pad Kit" will provide much the same experience. After they immerse their seeds in water, they will see lily pads sprout within a matter of days. The Earth Box kit will provide the opportunity to see how constant care is needed to produce fruits, vegetables, and even flowers. Students will experience the joy and satisfaction of caring for their own plants.
By supporting a project that is exciting for students, you can help provide a meaningful experience that has math and science skills embedded within the activity.
What better way is there to strengthen a student's skills than by making learning fun?
