Oh How I Wish I Could Read! ...Closing the Gap in Literacy

My students need 38 read-aloud story books to teach reading comprehension skills and instill a passion for learning amongst students.

My Students

One of the greatest obstacles my children constantly battle is reading comprehension and fluency. With 60% of my class being English Language Learners they struggle with reading because of the limited opportunities my students have to hear high interest books being read-aloud to them.

The future collegiate of 2020 are working hard to achieve their dreams and we believe that great work ethic and determination starts in 4th grade and is something that carries with you the rest of your life.

We believe that our classroom is a place to help prepare us for the rest of our lives... Life skills and critical thinking are essential in our classroom as we are in the process of learning what it means to be active educated citizens in a democratic world. In our collegiate classroom we learn life skills such as reading newspapers, voting and carrying out certain jobs to help our classroom run as a mini self-sustaining community. One of the most essential characteristics of a democratic community is becoming educated and learning the rewards of taking chances and believing in oneself and using our talents to contribute great things to society. In order to become these excellent members in our communities it is essential that we become excellent readers.

My Project

My students need read-aloud books and chapter books in order to get students interested and passionate about reading! According to the National Center for Education Statistics, reading aloud to a child improves their listening skills and memory functions, as well as fosters creativity. Students that have books read aloud to them are able to build confidence in reading comprehension and fluency. Unfortunately my students do not have the help or resources to be assisted with reading at home, which I have found causes many of my students to become discouraged and no longer enjoy reading at home, or in school. With 64% of 4th graders scoring below proficient level in public schools, I refuse to allow my students to continue this statistic. The reading gap will be closed with these resources, hard work, determination and the birth of 50 passionate readers in Miss M.'s 4th grade classroom.

The resources will be used by hundreds of students for years to come and could potentially close the achievement gap in literacy for our school.

Many of our students do not have the opportunity to have texts read aloud to them. These books are an incredible resource that can be used to help teach reading comprehension skills and instill a passion for reading! What an incredible gift that can last a lifetime!
