Making Teamwork Work

My students need a table for a workplace that will allow them to work collaboratively, have novel group discussions, and/or hold group tutorial sessions.

My Students

"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work." -Vince Lombardi. This is what I dream of for all of my students, and it can all begin in the classroom with a work area designated for teaming!

Being a middle school teacher I work with over 100 students a day.

I teach reading, writing, speech and debate, a college prep class, and I hold 8 small group tutorial sessions a week. It is an environment that screams for group work areas. Unfortunately when this school was built, this was not something that was considered. I have attempted to set a very comfortable work environment for my students (small couch areas for reading, tons of books and book shelves, nice lighting)...anything I can afford to do to help make reading and writing have positive associations for my students. One of the main things that this wonderful group of children is in need of though are group work tables. Any support would be appreciated!

My Project

In order to make teamwork work, one must first have the appropriate environment. Currently my class does not have a location to work effectively in small groups unless we rearrange our classroom daily moving chairs and shelves and pushing desks together. I feel that simply having this one table (to start with) will change the manner in which I teach. I will be able to work more with small groups addressing individual learning styles, needs, and ability levels. It will become the norm vs. the exception.

2 years ago I worked in a school that had group work tables, so I have seen the benefits for children first hand.

The tables were always in use: math game groups, novel group meetings, small group tutoring sessions etc. Having a small group kidney table allows students' voices to really be heard. They are no longer just 1 of 30 voices in a crowd, but an active group member and leader!
