Struggling 8th Readers Access Pulitzer-Prize Winning Books

My students need a class set of "Maus" in order to have a course novel we can study together as a class and to build our literacy skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 8th grade English students read, on average, at a third grade level. To address this challenge, they need to be reading rigorous texts every day in class. Unfortunately, my school is not currently able to afford more than five copies of a novel, which is a challenge in designing our curriculum.

My students are incredibly committed learners, and are never deterred by the limitations of their socioeconomic backgrounds.

They attend a Title 1 school, and nearly all of them are on free or reduced lunches. Despite this, my students have huge hopes for their futures. Nearly all of them can name the college they want to attend some day-- U of T, Yale, Emory-- and they want to have amazing jobs and accomplish great things when they grow up. I teach eighth graders who hope to someday be pediatricians, architects, lawyers, and magazine editors. They inspire me, and it is such a privilege to be their teacher.

My Project

"Maus" is a Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel that tells an allegorical story of the Holocaust. It follows the life of a man who is interviewing his father, a Holocaust survivor, and tells the story of his fathers' experiences as a survivor. "Maus" will be an incredible read for my students because the images in it will help my struggling readers, many of whom are four or more years behind in their reading levels, to comprehend what they are reading. For all my students, however, this beautiful and emotionally wrought story of the Holocaust will encourage them to read, and give them a rigorous, respected novel that they can read and write about for class. I want my students to learn the history that this book tells. More than that, I want them to experience being emotionally caught up in a book, and to experience having rigorous, meaningful discussions about a novel with their peers, something that many of my 8th graders have never done before.

If we don't get a class set of this book, my eighth graders will not be able to read a novel as a class during the course of their year in English.

This is unacceptable. All students should have the right to read and study novels in their English classes in order to be prepared readers and writers who are ready for high school and college. If we are able to study this book as a class, I am confident that it will increase my students' love of school and literature.
