My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met a graphic novel such as Persepolis.

My students attend an alternative school which operates under the Boys Town Model.

Our school offers many opportunities for our students such as a GED program, regular high school program, partnerships with trade schools and a local college, and a day care on site in which students can bring their children during the day. Many of our students, both male and female, have children. Many have a criminal history and are affiliated with local city gangs. Many have probation officers and court cases against them. Some have spent time in DYS and DHS for various reasons. Most every student receives counseling at our school. Our student population is mostly low economic social status. My students also come from various ethnic and language backgrounds. Class sizes are limited to 15 students per period per teacher for these reasons. This school and its faculty is sometimes the safest and most consistent place/people they have in their lives. They struggle everyday with issues many take for granted.

My Project

The books I've requested are two fold, to inspire students to overcome and to pique an interest in reading. Persepolis tells the story of a childhood gone awry by war and violence. But it's not your average book. It's a memoir written in the form of a graphic novel. Many students find these form more appealing and may be more apt to read within the context of a class unit.

This is my first year at my current school.

I have found that the school spends every dime it has to make the educational process successful for our students. This being said, we still need simple items such as actual class sets of books. This would be a great addition to a struggling English department and possibly that one chance for students to achieve state standards and graduate, even going on to college.
