This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Trying to study cells from the textbook is very difficult. My students do not understand the concept of cells because they do not have an opportunity to see them up close.
My seventh grade students do not have the opportunity to explore cells for understanding.
This is the first time many of the students have had an opportunity to use microscopes and make observations about cells. When they see a plant or animal cell in a textbook, they expect the cell to look the same way under the microscope. They expect the cell to have the same color and all the same organelles that are labeled in the textbook.
My Project
We all know that a textbook uses vivid illustrations, but sometimes the vivid illustrations are misleading. The students believe that what they see in the textbook will be the exact same thing they see under a microscope. The materials I am requesting will enable the students to study animal and plant cells in real time. The students will prepare a slide from a sample and then view the sample with the microscope. They will be able to record data and make illustrations that make sense to them. My students need 1 investigating cells kit and 1 refill with perishables to use during the study of cells.
This is important because our state standards say students must know cell structure and organelles that perform life functions as well as knowing that cells vary in size and shape.
It is very difficult for students to understand this without being able have an opportunity to observe cells and have the lasting experience.
