My students need a corkboard for at least one place to have their work displayed in our school and 4 stools to have a place to sit.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
On my first day at my high school I walked into empty art room. My students were making drawings on copy paper and practically sitting on top of each other for lack of table space. I want to give my students what they have a right to, proper art-making materials and a place to sit.
The school is rather large, about 1500 students, in southern Alabama.
For the most part the students are typical high school kids. They love football and weekends. The reason I believe these kids deserve classroom materials is because they have come to accept the subpar. They expect their school to be lacking and not meeting their needs. I would like to attempt to change that, at least within my own classroom.
When I arrived in the middle of the school term there were no materials outside of copy paper, colored pencils, scissors and glue. I have been purchasing materials out of my pocket so that we can do more interesting projects. There is not a single place in the school to display work; I would like to change that with the requested corkboard. I have some tables, but no seats. Some kids have to stand. The four requested stools would help students have a place to sit. I would like my students to know that art is valid and has it's place in this world and I want them to know that what they do in my class in important to me and the rest of our community.
I am an art teacher.
That is what I am good at, it is all I really know how to do. Therefore, doing the best at being an art teacher is the most important thing to me. I do not feel that my students are getting the best of me due to our limited resources. I am making it my mission to reach out to the community and the world wide web to better meet the needs of my students.
