My Students

Dr. Seuss has brought joy to many an early reader. When asked what books my students would like to have access to, titles by Dr. Seuss repeatedly came up. I only have a few books by this renowned author in my classroom and would love to provide my students with more opportunities to read his great works.

We are a first grade classroom in a low socioeconomic area.

My students do not have access to many books at home and students check out two library books once a week. I feel that since these students are not given many opportunities at home to read, they need to be exposed to as many books as possible while they are in my care. If they have access to a large classroom library in which they can find pleasure in reading, then they can carry that over to their home lives.

My Project

I do Guided Reading groups in our classroom while students participate in Daily 5 activities, such as Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing and Word Work. Because there is so much independent reading time, having access to a large classroom library with Good Fit books would be idyllic for my students. Dr. Seuss books are fun for everyone and have many different reading levels that can help all students, whether participating in Read to Self or simply listening to a read aloud. Many students still struggle with rhyming and as we all know, Dr. Seuss was the master of this fun activity.

Having access to a wide range of reading levels and a variety of books will help my students learn to love reading for the joy of it, not simply because they "have to." If students can read a book at their level, they will feel successful and continue to read, read, read.
