My Students

Every professional technician working to repair vehicles today will tell you that one of the most important tools they use is not a wrench or socket, but a laptop computer. This computer allows the technician access to service manuals, use PC-based scan tool software and utilize work order software.

My students are training for entry-level positions in the transportation industry as well as automotive training programs at community colleges and technical schools.

My students participate each year in the SkillsUSA program and have earned many podium finishes at the regional and state contests for Automotive Service and Automotive Repair. My students also participate in the Ford/AAA auto skills challenge, where they have taken 5th place in the state for the past two years. Most of my students aspire to careers in the transportation industry, and many are able to secure entry-level employment upon completing the training program here at Decatur High School. Many schools do not offer automotive training programs, so this program is an important to between high school and well-paying careers.

My Project

I am requesting a laptop computer that will allow my students to access Internet-based shop manuals, use PC-based scan tool programs to connect to the vehicle computer, and use the PC-based Oscilloscope to graph electrical patterns, such as fuel injectors and O2 sensors. All professional technicians use a laptop computer for these functions, and having this computer will allow me to train my students in a way that prepares them for the industry they plan to work in. Right now, the computers I have available for my students were built in 2004 and are running very old software. They are desktop computers, so they cannot easily be used to work on the vehicle. Having an up-to-date laptop will allow my students to perform these tasks and be better prepared for the industry.
