My Students

My students have been divided into different firms to experiment with catapults for the purpose of receiving a multi-million dollar military contract. The firm which can fire upon targets with the most precision and accuracy with the smallest relative error will receive the contract.

My students are made up of 60% African-American students, 35% Caucasian, and 5% of other nationalities.

We have some extremely poor students who make up our population, but we also have some quite wealthy. Each of our students has chosen to be a part of a project-based learning environment. Our students thrive on learning concepts in non-traditional ways. They are also required to collaborate with fellow students, teachers, and community members as part of their learning experience. Our students are made up of all different types of ability levels such as honors, college prep, remedial and special education students.

My Project

Our students will be firing catapults and recording data from those firings to help determine the accuracy and precision of future firings. The students will be required to create a poster for a public gallery walk. Each group will be required to place their documented data onto a poster. Once they have placed graphs, photos, and their summary of findings on their poster, they will be expected to articulate that to other students, faculty, parents, and community members who are invited to the gallery walk. The students should be able to articulate the differences between precision and accuracy, absolute and relative error, proper use of significant digits, and the precision of given measurement devices. It is imperative that they are able to summarize their findings for their given catapult. The students should come away from the project understanding the importance of the math concepts in a real-world setting.

In my state the concepts listed above makes up about 24% of their End-of-Course exam.

This project helps to solidify the knowledge needed to be successful on the End-of-Course exam. It also helps the students prepare for both Physical Science and Chemistry. The same concepts are used in both of the science subjects. Having a large format printer and paper would help to have a high quality gallery walk for our community presentations.
