My Students

My students are voracious readers. They cannot wait to get their hands on new books and look forward to our monthly visits to the local library. Unfortunately, many of them struggle as readers because of their reading fluency. They need to hear what fluent readers sound like!

My students come from a highly impacted neighborhood.

My students make the choice on a daily basis to rise above the drugs and violence in the surrounding neighborhood to better their lives through education. My students have the passion for learning new things and the dedication necessary to work hard and achieve their dreams.

My Project

The books on CD will help my students listen to books that they are interested in or familiar with to help them increase their fluency as readers. Listening to fluent readers will help them understand how to phrase correctly while reading and how to use expression to convey meaning. For some of my more struggling readers, the listening center will provide access to slightly challenging books. Students will be able to answer comprehension questions after listening to the books on CD.

This project is important because it benefits all students in the classroom.

Students reading at grade level will be able to hear what fluent readers sound like. Students reading below grade level will have access to highly engaging books that they would not be able to read independently.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
