Our reading and math groups are well underway in our classroom and we've been faced with a dilemma. The leap pads that have been a classroom staple for nearly four years have finally expired. They no longer hold a charge and we've found ourselves spending more on repair than we'd like. We need help!
I teach a dynamic group of first graders in Prince Georges County, Maryland.
Our school is located in a great community full of learners and educators interested in student success. My students are unique in that they are comprised of many dialects and represent some of the most beautiful countries that have been cited as tourist attractions. When faced with mastering some of the concepts that are required of first grade, I've noticed that many of my students require additional reinforcement of concepts that are taught throughout the day. The Leapster 2 and Tag products will assist students in many of the skills needed to complete first grade; number sequence, initial consonant sounds, letter/number recognition, and additional math concepts such as telling time, addition and subtraction. They will also expose my students to interactive and cooperative learning. Technology is always changing and if it could be used to enhance student learning, I want it to be available to my students.
The Backyardigans cartridge will allow students to experience the same outer space adventures that are viewed on the television show but with students having to complete math problems, identify shapes, and apply problem solving skills in the process. Super Speller will give students an opportunity to practice with identifying the letters and corresponding sounds to high frequency words and common phrases. This will build upon skills that are necessary for establishing fluency in reading and is a wonderful game for both beginning and on level readers. The best part about these items is that student data from classroom activities is made available online for parents wishing to track student progress and use the information as extension activities at home. To ensure that the products last, we also need storage cases and one rechargeable pack to charge at night for student use during the day!
By utilizing the Leapster 2 with books and games centered around programs that are viewed on learning channels such as Nick Jr., my students are still being presented with the same material that we have covered in class.
Only this time it's from peers and characters with whom they find pleasure in learning with while at home. We really need your help to leap into learning!
