My Students

It's a huge world out there. Speaking a new language helps you to get to know another people and culture, as language and culture go hand in hand. Learning another language, such as French, opens one's mind to new ideas and new ways of looking at the world.

Students in my school come from homes that struggle economically and socially, many of which are dysfunctional.

Many come from single parent homes. Violence is common throughout the neighborhoods in which they live. Students in my school struggle academically with only 33.5% meeting and exceeding on our state report card. The poverty level is above 90% and more that 85% are minority students. Yet, there are many students who are eager to learn and want to expand their horizons by learning another language. Learning a second language can narrow the achievement gap, benefit basic skills development, build higher order, abstract creative thinking, give students a sense of achievement, and improve chances of college acceptance. I want to give my students every opportunity available! They deserve this opportunity to extend their learning.

My Project

These Scholastic News Magazines feature high-interest articles on the culture of French-speaking nations. My students will be able to see through another source the different cultures where French is spoken. My teens will be more engaged through articles that cover celebrities, sports figures, and more to inspire students while they read in French. The Language Cd's will help students with accent and nuance as they listen to material not found in the magazines. The Online Resources will allow me to extend learning through a whiteboard or classroom computer and will include weekly news stories at different proficiency levels for my students.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if students could exchange information about topics relating to themselves, their family, and their leisure activities in French.

Knowing French will allow students to compete in a global society. They will have increased job opportunities and salary potential. They will have a better understanding of others and their cultures. Learning French increases English vocabulary. French is the language of culture opening your door to art, music, dance, fashion, and cuisine.
