My Students

Imagine being able to examine the skeletal remains in an owl pellet. Food webs and chains will jump off the page as students take the role of Environmental CSI Scientists.

My students are seventh graders in an urban school district.

They are very academically dedicated students. They are hungry for hands-on science. After saying hello, their next question is "What are we doing today? Are we doing an investigation?" I love being able to say yes and then watch the smiles and excitement I see in their eyes.

My Project

These materials will be used to explore predator prey relationships. By the end of the study students will have a clear picture of the owl's niche and habitat. The students first reaction is "Yuck! I don't want to touch an owl pellet!" Within minutes they dig in and become investigative scientists. When they realize how many animals are represented in the pellet they start to piece together the environment the owl is a part of. The final aspect of the study involves the students putting the skeletons of the prey together on construction paper. They examine the various bones and in turn the anatomy of the prey. Students will not soon forget the days they got to work as an Environmental CSI.

By donating to this project you will be giving my students a rich opportunity to examine nature up close and personal.

Many urban students have very little personal experience with nature. Science will come alive for my students, by putting these materials in their hands. This project will be another opportunity for me to see the excitement hands on science inspires.
