My Students

Imagine Shakespeare's love story unfolding before your very eyes! Romeo and Juliet comes to life in comic book form as students read in a new and exciting way.

My 33 English I students are from a high poverty area in rural Tennessee.

Many of them are not exposed to high quality educational resources, like educational comic books, and I want to change that. Our county has a high percentage of drug usage and troubled teens. With literature, I want to inspire my students to strive for something more in their life.

My Project

The Manga edition of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will give students a fresh look at Shakespeare and at literature in general. When students have to use ten-year-old textbooks over and over and read Shakespeare (a somewhat boring author to begin with), many students get bogged down in the language and their understanding is hampered by their boredom. I want to combat their misconception of Shakespeare with these comic books. Now, my students will see that literature can be fun.

Hopefully, these comic books will produce some life-long readers and learners.

Through a well-loved medium, I hope to inspire my students to read for fun and personal enjoyment, not just because a teacher tells them they have to.
