My Students

The author Christopher Benson said, “All the best stories in the world are but one story in reality-the story of escape. It is the only thing which interests us all and at all times, how to escape.”

My students are sophomores who come from a wide array of backgrounds, but share the common burden of having a reading ability far below grade level.

Many come from low income homes where divorce is common. Several of my students are in foster care or are bussed from the local residential institution. A few are from families where English is the second language. Yet, they all have a desire to improve their reading and writing abilities.

My Project

I want to share with my students the joy of escaping the horrors of everyday life by jumping into a book with their eyes and minds wide open. However, it is difficult to truly delve into the books we read when we have only hard plastic chairs to sit in. The addition of comfortable chairs to my classroom will provide students with a safe and relaxing environment in which to focus their reading efforts.

Being a struggling reader at the high school level is a daily challenge.

This project will enhance the programs in place in my classroom that are designed to help these students reach grade level. Your support would be greatly appreciated by my 23 special education students!
