My Students

Do you remember that "Ah hah!" moment you had in school? That one lesson that made you understand a concept you were learning? Technology makes learning that much more real! I want my students to experience this!

I am a founding faculty member at my charter school.

We are in our 11th year. I have been teaching for 14 years. I have only worked with under privileged. Students like these need consistency, someone who cares, a teacher they can depend on, and someone that makes them want to come to school every day. Most of my students dread summer because they loose the stability of school and their teachers. Students notice the little things in life that we adults overlook. They teach us to appreciate each moment. For my students it's about getting to school, whether or not they have a clean uniform or any uniform at all, and whether or not they can get someone up to get them to school. Once at school I want to hear their ooohs and aaaahs as they learn. That's an exciting lesson!

My Project

Last Spring I purchased an Ipad (a big investment for me). I realized I was constantly getting out my Smartphone to teach students what a wippoorwill sounded like, or to show a video of how penguins toboggan. I knew an Ipad would enhance their learning. My purchase inspired me to attend a technology course this past summer. Over the summer a document camera and projector were installed in my classroom. These devices, my one Ipad, and the tech classes have led me to be creative in my lessons. My latest lesson was on Staten Island and the statue of liberty. My students didn't know where Staten Island was. Nor had they been on a ferry. We looked at photos of Staten Island. I incorporated sounds of a ferry horn and a captain saying, "All aboard last ferry for Staten Island." My students faces lit up! Imagine what I can do with even more materials!

The wireless tablet will allow students to interact with lessons projected on the screen.

A wifi memory card allows me to easily upload pictures of student work and field trip experiences on to my Ipad. My goal is to create student portfolios on the Ipad. Imagine recording how a student's reading grows through out the year! The head phones will allow students to work on my Ipad without disrupting others. Thanks for helping my students CLIMB TO THE TOP! Next up acquiring 18 Ipads!
