My Students

Video games, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Television are just a few of the things teachers must contend with when trying to get students to experience the joy of reading. Allowing students to integrate technology in their reading will help students engage with text in a brand new way.

My school is an alternative school setting for students with disabilities in Metro Atlanta.

Many of the students have emotional behavioral disorders and some are autistic. Most of our students are served in mixed groups so we may have a middle school class with students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in the same room at the same time taking the same subject.

My Project

If/when we're awarded these resources our struggling readers will have the ability to make their own audio books with the microphones we've requested, download and read just about any kind of literature they can think of with the e-books we've requested, and they'll also be able to download and listen to audio books while they read along in class using the mp3 players we've requested. Technology can truly be the tool that serves as a catalyst for academic achievement in our school.

The kids love to learn but lack access to the same high quality resources that other schools and students take for granted.

Our library is almost completely bare, our computers are antiques, and we lack adaptive listening materials for our struggling readers. The resources we've requested will give ALL of our students access to any book they can think of, allow our struggling readers to listen to others read popular texts, and allow the students to record their own audio books.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
