My Students

Crafting ideas and stories through the visual medium of film is one of the most effective ways to communicate today. Where did Steven Spielberg get his start-in the classroom? Back then, it was Super 8. Today, technology allows us to write, film and edit in a shorter period of time.

I teach Language Arts, Drama and Visual Performing Arts to a range of students with a mixture of abilities, from GATE to special needs and everyone in between.

They are a diverse group of seventh and eighth graders from various parts of the world, who become more engaged when technology is included in the curriculum. They enjoy reading, working with their hands and creating fun projects with their friends. The school they attend is in a suburban area constructed in a commercial business park that is considered a sister city to Silicon Valley. Technology is used on a daily basis.

My Project

Last year, I began the school’s first film club. We had the ideas, we had the camera, and we had the time. But there was one thing missing. A computer in the classroom fast enough to handle video editing, so students could be trained and guided. Last year, students took their work home with them and pieced together films that were poorly edited because they did not have the supervision and training. As a result, they worked alone and they lost motivation. If we had only one computer in the classroom, students could work together as they piece together their own films and feel motivated to produce more films on a regular basis. It would give Film Club a center, a place where students knew they could produce their work without frustration.

Where did many of the men and women who attend the Oscar Awards get their beginning in film?

They got their start in the classroom. Please help students follow their dreams of creating magic on the movie screen by bringing technology into the classroom and donating to this project.
