My Students

Every time a student tells me, "I don't like to read," I simply respond that they just haven't found the right book. For me, that "right book" was the collected works of Flannery O'Connor: it opened my eyes to a new world of creativity, beauty, and imagination.

I have the privilege of teaching the most genuine young men and women I have ever known.

We live in the rural foothills of North Carolina in a largely agricultural section of our humble state. We are an early college high school--which means we aim to serve economically underprivileged, first-generation college student minorities in our small community with a free, publicly funded high school and associates level degree education. Given all of the challenges these students must overcome, I can honestly say they are some of the best people I have ever met and I am so proud of who they are all becoming.

My Project

Imagine a world where all the books you ever read were written by people you had no connection with: people from Russia, from Africa, from New York City. For my students in American literature, our curriculum revolves around the books and concerns of people that know practically nothing about what it is like to live in the rural South. I hope to change all of that with the introduction of the beautifully crafted novels, short stories, and letters of Flannery O'Connor. This one book contains three novels, two collections of short stories, and the private correspondence of Flannery O'Connor. I hope to connect our reading of O'Connor to other Southern writers and incorporate all of this into a comprehensive unit on stories of the South where the students interview their family members about their lives and we compile an oral history of our region. This life changing work can only be accomplished through the igniting of their creative flame with this wonderful book.

I only have a few years with these wonderful, impressionable,young minds and I hope that the works of Flannery O'Connor will do for them what it did for me: opened my mind to the beauty of the Southern culture, gave me a literary hero I could be proud of, and it helped me find out who I truly am.
