My Students

Have you ever heard the old adage, "a picture is worth a thousand words?" As a teacher of English, I believe "a thousand words is worth more than one picture." It is our vocabulary that allows us to master the most important art: communication.

As a teacher of English at a Title I school in Texas, it is essential that my students have every available resource at their disposal in my classroom, especially if they are to be successful on their STAAR exams.

My junior high students come from many different backgrounds and ethnicities, each with a unique and individual story to tell. They are challenged daily with the goal of "rising to the top" in order to achieve their highest possible potential. Regardless of their lives outside of school and even though it sometimes stands in the way of their personal success, I feel it is important that my students be given EVERY opportunity to succeed despite race, social status, or hindrances at home.

My Project

I am requesting a Classroom Set of The American Heritage College Dictionary. These dictionaries are used daily to strengthen the core vocabulary and spelling abilities of my students. We examine each new vocabulary word by exploring its etymology. We look at Latin and Greek roots, word parts, suffixes, prefixes, and affixes. This is essential to verbal and written communication. In turn, having a knowledge of the history of the word and the way it is formed allows for my students to apply that knowledge to words they have never seen before, thus increasing their fluency, comprehension, and higher level thinking skills essential for secondary education.

Though your support, each dictionary donated to my classroom will further the success of each of my students.
