My Students

I was so moved when I heard the presentation about Rachel Scott, the first student to die in the Columbine Shootings. Her family has created an amazing program to spread her message that everyone matters and kindness can spread far and wide. I want my students to be inspired by this beautiful message.

My middle school students are wonderful.

They really want more opportunities to get involved at school. Every day I witness small acts of kindness that go so far and sometimes they don't even realize how they have made someone's day a little brighter. We are a suburban middle school with almost 1000 students.

My Project

Rachel's challenge will provide a full day with our school. They do two multi-media assemblies and a peer training on their program. But it doesn't stop there, they even meet with the community in the evening to present the program. We also get a Friends of Rachel kit to start a student club where we can start our own chain reaction of kindness and have a positive impact on our world and beyond. This is directly from Rachel's Challenge Website: Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America. Powerful video/audio footage of Rachel's life and the Columbine tragedy holds students spell-bound during a one hour school presentation that motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others.

The four main challenges my students will learn are to treat others the way you want to be treated, dream big and believe in yourself, appreciate everyone, mock no one, and to practice positive gossip!

This project is so important because of the message they teach. Their focus is to start a chain reaction of kindness. The fact that her family can teach such a beautiful message and program in the face of such tragedy is so inspiring. Imagine what a chain of kindness this will create.
