My Students
Over 750 students eagerly await the start of their latest drawing, waiting in line for a pencil sharpener that may or may not work. We put our pencils to the test while creating our personal masterpieces every day. We need a sharpener that can keep up to the flow of our creativity.
We are so fortunate to be living in the Midwest.
Our students are farm kids, city kids, some come from homes with everything and some who have nothing. What is beautiful here is that we do have such diversity. We are a "super-sized" school, meaning that we have over 750 students in grades K-5. So, not only are our days full, but our classrooms and hallways are too. Being in a large school does have it's disadvantages, but overall it is wonderful to be with children ages 5-11! The older students serve as role model/mentors for the younger ones. It is a wonderful situation.
My Project
Yes, I could have a volunteer come in to sharpen pencils. I could even have a student (or two) helper do it for me. However, having a pencil and being able to sharpen it is part of the process. It encourages independence, self reliance and responsibility. Not only are we teaching and practicing art skills, we are teaching and practicing life skills. The more that students can take on their own responsibilities the more self sufficient they will become.
It seems so simple to request a pencil sharpener.
But the wear and tear on our current sharpeners is so great that we burn them out quickly- even the manual ones. It is very difficult to require a student to be self sufficient, when he/she does not have the tools to make that possible. Please help us to have this basic tool available to all students in our classroom.
