My Students
Story telling has almost been eradicated from our every day lives. Even though some of my students come from cultural traditions in which story telling was once valued and practiced, they do not get to benefit from this cultural tradition anymore.
My students at BHS are high percentage African American.
They come from poor families where supplies are limited, and group collaboration skills are lacking (due to limited or lack of parental involvement). In my class, through story telling (Total Physical Response Stories), they get to learn language through listening, creating, and telling stories.
My Project
The materials I have asked for will help the students create posters where they will showcase aspects about the culture (honoring the Day of the Dead), create characters using some of the physical descriptions they have learned in class, and write a narrative about their characters in a colorful manner right on the poster paper. They will add specific visual details to enhance comprehension of others of their stories. Students will work step by step in amounts of time assigned by their teacher, then laminate their posters to showcase them in a prominent place at our school for the student body to appreciate and enjoy.
This project is important because it promotes the use of learning language through story telling and story recounting.
It will help students to utilize a variety of learning modalities as they complete the project. It will inspire other teachers to adopt and adapt story telling in their curricula as an effective way of conveying meaning. And it will give the students a tremendous sense of pride as they see their work prominently displayed around our school. Thank you for considering this request.
